2017 is another remarkable year for me. Studied abroad, got my master degree, checked some of my travel lists and at the end got my first job.
Started the year with frustrated feeling looked at my first term mark. The standard was really high, indeed. Even 65 was already considered great mark. At that time, I lost my confidence to learn for the first time. I feel like a dwarf.
But you do not stop just because a simple thing like mark isn’t it? After that was just a long sleepless night for me. Trying to understand what the lecturer said in the class. I also came to the lecturer room and discussed how can I improve my essay. They were really open and supportive! Wish lecturer in Indonesia could do the same.
The dissertation was the most challenging part. I had to finish it in 3 months time. At first, I thought it was impossible considering how long did I do my undergraduate thesis. Moreover, I chose the internship scheme which means I had to make another report for the company.
Luckily, I got two superb teammates. One German who was unlike the other German and one super-experienced manager from Nigeria. Asia-Europe-Africa collaborated. Skype and Nvivo was our savior!
During the dissertation process, every day was a workday. I wrote minimal 500 words daily and read probably thousand paper in the process. It paid off when the mark was out and I got the distinction mark at the end.
Nevertheless, study abroad is not as easy as it looks. Some of my Indonesfriendsiend was depressed and even a few of them started to think about suicide! Yes, they did! It needs a combination of grit, relentless mental and physical strength to survive.
Another thing that I can’t forget was my badminton experience in the UK. Had a chance to watch the oldest badminton tournament, the legendary All England, where the new star was born, Kevin/Marcus. They recently broke the record becoming the most successful MD in one calendar year, 7 Super Series titles! Simply amazing achievement!
However, the most remarkable one was watching Liliyana/Tontowi stood on the highest podium in BWF World Championship at Glasgow. I decided to go there at the last minute, in the middle of my dissertation deadline, and ended up hearing “Indonesia Raya” for the first time abroad! Had a goosebump at that moment!
Besides that, I had a chance to travel around Europe. Dream comes true. Prague, Budapest, Florence, and Barcelona are my favorite cities. Believe me, it is more beautiful than Paris, Amsterdam, Milan and another touristy city!
Travel for me is about yourself. That is why every person has a different preference because they have an emotional bond to a certain place. Just like why I decided to visit Berlin. Before I went to the UK, I was fascinated to hear my father told me his experience in crossing the German Wall border. Therefore I decided to go to Berlin to see its ruins by myself.
I am also an #avgeek. That is why I want to visit the Airbus factory to see how the plane is made. Seems odd for the other people, isn’t it? I tried to visit the main factory in Toulouse but considering my budget, I decided to go to their second factory in Hamburg. Really pleased with the tour and still looking for an opportunity to visit Toulouse one day.
As you probably know, I am FC Barcelona fan! A Camp Nou tour is a must, but ending up my journey in Europe with watching Barca won the Catalan derby live in the stadium was an amazing experience. Also, saw the little magician scoring hattrick in that match. Couldn’t ask for a better ending.
Finally, 2017 concluded with the job hunting process. After a long process of contemplating, I decided to go out of my comfort zone again. Started to look for an opportunity outside the tech company, without forgetting my root in IT.
I saw an opportunity in one company, prepared the application and underwent a rapid selection process. Here I am right now, working for a bank, a member of a global financial group. It just one month yet many more to come.
2018 is another challenging year. A new goal has been set, let’s make 2018 become another year to remember!
